Day 8 – On the Way to Heartwood

by Heather on June 3, 2008

We had a Curly Sue breakfast as we were out of eggs and the grocery store, New Frontier Market didn’t open until 8:00am.

This store was really great! All the produce sans two items was organic. They has the nicest & biggest bulk food section-they even had local honey, agave grade B maple syrup, spelt flour, vital wheat gluten, spices, pastas, teas, etc.!!!! Jonathan talked with them regarding their composting system and what he has to offer them and will make further contact with them. There are six of these stores; three in AZ and three in CA. Quite comparable to Whole Foods. AND they sell raw milk in the grocery-$10.99/gallon! IMG_0597.JPG

We left Flagstaff by 10:20 and $175.00 less (grocery bill) en route for Bayfield, CO.

Just outside of town we passed two guys and their dogs that had a sign for Paige, AZ we figured with two healthy looking dogs they couldn’t be all bad. They were decent folk, Ohm and Pugsly and their dogs Norma Jean and ??? They rode with us for about an hour and then when our paths were parting we let them out with a gallon of water and two apples (thanks Monte Carlos for the two apples-we got them from the front desk as we were passing through the hotel). Pugsly and the dogs sat in the back with the children and me. Nadine loved having the dogs in the RV and another person from whom she could try to get some attention. Ohm rode in the front with JR and used the iPhone to look at some things on the internet. ) I asked Jonathan if we should blog about picking up the hitch hikers and he said, “people already think we are crazy for doing what we are doing, so might as well share that too!)

We stopped at The Four Corners (New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado and Utah) paid $6 and Nadine, Jonathan and I all put our feet on the four corners at the same time. Samson was in the sling and did not participate, as he has not yet had his ground touching ceremony (at six months of age). I made messy Joes while we were stopped there-Nadine’s request of what she would like to eat. IMG_0608.JPG

We arrived at Heartwood around 6:00, but were really 7:00 as we forgot the time change. We were supposed to be here between 2:00 and 4:00-we ran into some road construction and also forgetting the time change really threw us off.

Nadine was able to get some of her pent up energy out on the wonderful play structure before showering, eating French toast for dinner and going to bed. Tonight we are sleeping in the guest room, which is located in the community building at Heartwood.
